Leah Tutman (pictured above right), who played Anne Frank in the 2007 Pisces Moon Young Company production of And then they came for me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank, will portray her once again -- this time in a stage play written by her brother, Avi, as part of their multi-tiered production Heart and Mind. Heart and Mind, inspired by Anne Frank's short but powerfully influential life, combines historically-based narrative scenes more

The Gail Rich Awards ceremony and reception annually honors local artists and arts supporters with an evening of tribute at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center. This year's event took place on January 28 to honor the 2009 recipients, which included Pisces Moon's own artistic director Susan Myer Silton, as well as philanthropists Rowland and Pat Rebele, Santa Cruz Film Festival director Jane Sullivan, sculptor and painter Dag Weiser, Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre directors Robert Kelley and Diane Cypher, interior designer and chef Mimi Snowden, curator and artist Kirby Scudder and the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz. Pisces Moon opened the ceremony with excerpts from our recent play, The Laramie Project, performed by Akwia Diane Knipe, Marc A. Nicholson, LeAnne Ravinale, Jasmine Schlafke and Linda Turner.

The awards ceremony celebrated its 13th year. It was originated by the Santa Cruz Sentinel and named for the late Gail Rich, a tireless advocate for the arts in Santa Cruz. The evening was hosted by Sentinel arts editor Wallace Baine, and presented by the Cultural Council Associates and the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County.

"Flipping the Script on Bias and Bullies"
by
Scott Hewitt

An excerpt from the article:

"To ... Pisces Moon Theater Company in Santa Cruz, Calif., doing social justice theater means choosing edgy, issue-oriented plays — and drawing on perspectives from the community ... When Pisces Moon was preparing to stage ... Dead Man Walking, [Artistic Director Susan Myer] Silton worked with a local high school to develop a broad interdisciplinary look at capital punishment.

'They went all across the curriculum,' she said. 'There were courses in the history of the death penalty, writing, political activism, and forensic science — even political cartooning and art, which led to the creation of marketing materials for the play.'"
