SOCIAL JUSTICE CONFERENCE

2nd Annual
Social Justice Conference

at
Cabrillo College

Imagining Change/Shaping the Future II

Saturday, April 19, 2008 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm

◊

The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.

-Martin Luther King Jr.

Students must have initiative; they should not be mere imitators. They must learn to think and act for themselves--and be free.

-Cesar Chavez

◊

Social justice is a movement working toward a more just, humane society in which all individuals and groups experience fair treatment and have equitable access to the benefits of society.

Program

Cabrillo College’s 2nd Annual Social Justice Conference will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2008 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm and will include a key-note speaker, break-out sessions, a community fair and a children's fair.

Speakers, including Cabrillo College students, faculty, staff and administrators will present research and creative projects concerning social justice issues, and as with the 2007 conference, community-based organizations will distribute information about their work toward social justice during the lunchtime community fair.

Pisces Moon will be part of a panel discussion, “Social Discourse Through Art: A Case Study, The Dead Man Walking School Theatre Project”. We'll talk about our recent production of Dead Man Walking and the collaboration with Delta Charter High School and Cabrillo College through the Dead Man Walking School Theatre Project.

Our presentation will include a summary of the project by project members, video clips from the project, a performance, and speakers from the audience. At the end there will be an opportunity for social discourse among the presenters and audience.

The Conference keynote speaker is Ms. Banafsheh Akhlaghi, Attorney at Law and founder of the National Legal Sanctuary for Community Advancement, a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the human rights and dignity of Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (MEMSA) peoples.

There will be a "Children's Faire", which will provide child-centered activities with social justice themes during both break-out sessions. All ages welcome, but a parent or legal guardian must be present.

The conference is free and open to the public. A light lunch will be served, also at no cost.
